ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Following the announcement of Attilio’s inaugural Longevity Event, CEO & Founder Paul A. Pagnato and Dr. Laura Carstensen of Stanford University presented to R360 in Tuscany, Italy. Carstensen, Co-Chair of Attilio’s Longevity Event and founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, joined Pagnato for a fireside chat titled Myth vs Reality: Eleven Ideas That Change How We Think About a Longer Life.

Carstensen and Pagnato opened with longevity escape velocity, the point at which science adds more than one year of life expectancy for every year that passes. Futurists such as Ray Kurzweil have predicted the milestone by 2030, but life expectancy gains in the longest living countries have risen roughly three months a year for the past 160 years, about a quarter of the pace required, according to a 2024 study in Nature Aging.

They argued the realistic strategy is to maximize healthspan today, using the Stanford Center on Longevity’s New Map of Life as a guide for a century of living that includes multiple careers, learning at every stage, and families spanning four or five generations at once.

The conversation then turned to money. Research shows income does affect lifespan, Americans at the top live 10 to 15 years longer than those at the bottom, according to a 2016 study published in JAMA. Above a certain income level, though, the gains flatten, and relationships and purpose make the larger difference from there.

Pagnato and Carstensen also took on the appeal of the newest supplement or biohack. Compounds such as rapamycin, NAD+, and metformin show promise in early research but have no proven longevity benefit in humans. The interventions with the strongest evidence remain sleep, strength training, cardiorespiratory fitness, and close relationships, tools available to nearly everyone regardless of income.

The talk closed with Carstensen’s own research on the positivity effect, the finding that emotional wellbeing tends to improve with age rather than decline, as older adults focus on what matters most and hold fewer regrets.

Also in attendance, all part of the Attilio team, were Dr. Mike Stone, Attilio Longevity Event faculty and founder of a precision medicine practice and former Harvard Medical School faculty; Peter Fioretti, Attilio Executive Chairman; and Bob Castellini, Chief Growth Officer of Attilio.

“People assume the science of aging is settled, or that it is only for people who can afford a private clinic,” said Paul A. Pagnato, CEO & Founder of Attilio. “Neither one is true, and that is exactly what we wanted this room to hear.”
