Journalists, media leaders and supporters to gather at Capitale for the annual Loeb Awards Banquet and Celebration

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The G. and R. Loeb Foundation Inc. and UCLA Anderson School of Management today announced the career honorees and 42 competition finalists for the 2026 Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism. The finalists represent outstanding work across 13 competitive categories, recognizing reporting and storytelling that advanced public understanding of business, finance and the economy. Winners will be announced live at the Loeb Awards Banquet and Celebration on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Capitale in New York City.

Created to encourage and recognize reporting on business, finance and the economy that informs and protects investors and the public, the Loeb Awards are considered the highest honor in business journalism in the United States.

Loeb Awards Banquet and Support for the Mission

The Loeb Awards banquet and celebration will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the newly renovated Capitale in New York City. The evening will feature live announcements of the winning journalists and media outlets in 13 competition categories, along with tributes to career honorees Stephen Engelberg and Marcelo Prince. Hosted by Tyler Mathisen, former CNBC anchor, the event brings together journalists from around the world, media executives and industry leaders for an evening of recognition, connection and celebration. Journalists participating as category presenters will be announced in the coming weeks via LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter).

Career Achievement Honorees

Stephen Engelberg, editor-in-chief of ProPublica, will receive the 2026 Loeb Lifetime Achievement Award. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a journalist whose career exemplifies the consistent superior insight and professional skills necessary to further the understanding of business, financial and economic issues.

Engelberg has spent more than four decades in journalism, building a distinguished career as a reporter, editor and newsroom leader. Before joining ProPublica, he spent 18 years at The New York Times, where he helped establish the newspaper’s investigative unit and contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting. He later served as managing editor of The Oregonian before becoming a founding managing editor of ProPublica in 2008 and editor-in-chief in 2013.

Under Engelberg’s leadership, ProPublica has grown into one of the nation’s most influential investigative news organizations, earning numerous Gerald Loeb Awards and Pulitzer Prizes during his tenure. He has championed ambitious reporting on corporate misconduct, financial abuses, tax policy, consumer protection and government accountability, while helping pioneer new models for nonprofit, digital and local investigative journalism that have reshaped the industry and expanded the reach of public service reporting.

Engelberg’s vision and leadership have expanded the reach and impact of accountability reporting, leaving a lasting imprint on the profession and exemplifying the values of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Marcelo Prince, enterprise editor for business, finance and economics at The Wall Street Journal, will receive the 2026 Lawrence Minard Editor Award. Created in memory of Lawrence “Laury” Minard, founding editor of Forbes Global and a former final judge for the Loeb Awards, this award recognizes excellence in business, financial and economic journalism editing. It honors an editor whose work does not often receive public recognition.

Prince joined The Wall Street Journal in 1999, and in more than two decades has earned a reputation as one of the newsroom’s most respected editors, mentors and teachers. In his current role, he works with reporters around the world on enterprise stories and investigations, helping journalists elevate their reporting, storytelling and editorial judgment. Previously, he served as corporate bureau chief, overseeing coverage of some of the world’s largest companies and leading one of the Journal‘s most diverse business reporting teams.

Throughout his career, Prince has guided reporters to Gerald Loeb Awards, Pulitzer Prizes and other journalism honors while helping produce investigations that prompted government inquiries, corporate accountability and industry change. Known for his collaborative leadership and commitment to developing journalists, he has fostered a culture of mentorship and curiosity, and has guided innovative approaches to investigative, visual and data-driven storytelling that inform the public and hold powerful institutions accountable. He also co-founded the Journal‘s Hispanic and Latino employee resource group, training early-career reporters and mentoring journalists across the newsroom while sharing lessons that have shaped countless careers.

About Gerald Loeb
Gerald Martin Loeb was born in 1899 in San Francisco, California. He began his career in 1921 in the bond department of a securities firm. He moved to New York City in 1924 to help establish E.F. Hutton and eventually ascended to vice chairman of the board. During Gerald Loeb’s career, he was a favorite of business and financial journalists for his willingness to be interviewed and was described as “probably the most quoted man on Wall Street” (Forbes 1955). He was also an author of two investment strategy books, a guest columnist for Forbes and widely considered a Wall Street icon. In 1957, he established the G. and R. Loeb Foundation (under the stewardship of the University of Connecticut) to present the Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism. In 1973, he transferred the stewardship of the awards to UCLA Anderson School of Management under the deanship of Harold Williams.
